What Next For England?

We look at the betting to see what the future holds for England. Who will be captain and which players could make the Euro 2012 squad?

Fabio Capello’s resignation caught many people by surprise, not least the bookmakers who were offering odds of 5/1 on the Italian leaving before Euro 2012. So what does the future hold for the England team?

Next Permanent England Manager

Harry Redknapp - 2/5 BetVictor
Stuart Pearce – 15/2 Paddy Power
Guus Hiddink – 10/1 BetVictor

The popular choice is Harry Redknapp, with the job his to turn down if newspaper reports are to be believed. If he is the certainty that everyone is predicting then the 2/5 with BetVictor is big. With Tottenham fighting for the title and a Champions League spot within their grasp Redknapp might wait until the end of the season before taking up an England role.

England Captain at Euro 2012

Steven Gerrard – 5/6 Sportingbet
Scott Parker – 11/4 BetVictor
Joe Hart – 8/1 BetVictor

With Harry Redknapp the front-runner to become England manager Scott Parker’s odds have shortened from 4/1 to 11/4 (BetVictor) to be captain at Euro 2012. The bookmakers think the Tottenham connection will work in his favour, although Redknapp might recoil from appointing Parker to avoid accusations of favouritism.

To Make England’s Euro 2012 Squad

Aaron Lennon – 8/11 Skybet
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 5/6 Skybet
Ledley King – 6/4 Skybet
Michael Dawson – 5/2 Skybet
Michael Carrick – 11/2 Skybet
Joe Cole – 6/1 Skybet
Ben Foster – 7/1 Skybet
Paul Robinson – 25/1 Skybet

It will be interesting to see how the England manager assembles his squad for Euro 2012. With only four months until the tournament, there probably isn’t time for wholesale changes but it will give fringe players new hope. If Harry Redknapp does take charge, will he favour players he is familiar with?

There is also the chance a new manager could tempt players out of international retirement such as the goalkeepers Ben Foster and Paul Robinson, both long odds to make the squad.
