United 8/1 For Europa League
Both Manchester teams have to settle for the second tier cup competition after early exits from the Champions League.
Being second favourites for a European cup competition would normally be a reason to be cheerful but that is something Sir Alex Ferguson certainly won’t be after his team dropped out of the Champions League. A surprise defeat against Basle means United will contest the Europa League in the New Year and they are 8/1 (Blue Square) to win it.
With a difficult trip to neighbours City in the FA Cup and a deficit to overhaul in the League, the Europa League might represent their easiest route to silverware. United are now 4/7 (Paddy Power) to finish the season with no trophies.
The same fate befalls Manchester City although their exit from the Champions League was less of a shock with destiny out of their own hands. With a strong squad at his disposal Roberto Mancini’s team are 6/1 favourites with William Hill.
