Tottenham v Newcastle

Van der Vaart: ruled out

It's been a great week for Harry Redknapp. Fate suggests he will still be smiling on Saturday night.

This televised Saturday evening clash will receive huge media attention with the Spurs manager overwhelming favourite to become the next England manager. But Harry Redknapp is desperate to do right by his current employers and anything less than three points here will lead to accusations, rightly or wrongly, that he has taken his eye off the ball.

Of course Tottenham still also have an outside chance of winning the Premier League title; they could move within four points of Man City for at least 24 hours with a triumph in this one. There is a lot at stake, but Spurs have been so professional this season that we have little reason to doubt their ability to beat the sides below them, especially at White Hart Lane.

However, Newcastle arrive on good form with four wins in their last five and it’s hard to imagine they won’t make this a close contest. The strength of the Magpies makes best odds of 8/15 (WilliamHill) on a straight home win pretty unappealing. However, I do think a slender victory for the hosts is most likely, it’s just a question of finding the value.

It’s the sort of game that will probably be defined by whether the deadlock is broken early on. If so, then it could turn into an entertaining end-to-end contest with a few goals. If not, then one late strike may just be enough.

But in a week where everything has come up roses for Redknapp it’s hard to imagine he isn’t destined for three points one way or another. It may be 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2 but a Tottenham victory by a one-goal margin looks a good shout at best odds of 11/4 with Bet365.
