The Giant Killers

The mighty could fall

The 3rd round of the FA Cup is a chance to dream, but can any of the outsiders take a notable scalp?

The FA Cup is held in great affection because it gives David the chance to pit his wits against Goliath. We look at the five biggest outsiders to see if any giants can be felled.

Liverpool (1/6) v Oldham (20/1); Draw (15/2)
Oldham are without an away win since October, Liverpool are unbeaten at home this season. The one shining light for Oldham is their cup form. They are in the Northern Final of the Johnstones Paint Trophy and haven’t lost a cup game in normal time all season. Liverpool have struggled to score at Anfield and the longer Oldham holdout the more belief they will have.
Giant killing potential: 2/10

Chelsea (2/9) v Portsmouth (16/1); Draw (6/1)
It is a repeat of the 2010 final but both teams are a shadow of the ones that graced Wembley. Chelsea are in the process of rebuilding under their new manager, where as Portsmouth are going through their umpteenth change of ownership.

On the pitch both are inconsistent but generally avoid defeat, having only lost once in their last seven league matches. Under the circumstances all the pressure will be on Chelsea and whilst they are not on top form there is a chance of an upset.
Giant killing potential: 5/10

Everton (1/8) v Tamworth (33/1); Draw (10/1)
Since securing the lucrative tie on Merseyside, Tamworth have struggled in the league, losing three of their last four. The odds reflect the gulf in class but they should be nearer 66/1 shots for what would be a huge upset.
Giant killing potential: 1/10

Arsenal (3/10) v Leeds (11/1); Draw (5/1)
After knocking Manchester United out of the cup in 2010, Leeds have developed a giant killing appetite. Like Portsmouth they travel with nothing to lose and that can be dangerous. Injuries have left Arsenal vulnerable in defence and the gulf in class between the Premier League and the Championship probably isn’t as big as in previous recent years; just look at the success Norwich and Swansea are enjoying.
Giant killing potential: 5/10

Sheff Utd (1/5) v Salisbury City (16/1); Draw (13/2)
Sat 16th in the Blue Square conference south division, there is a fair gap to Sheffield United, third of League One. It is a struggle to see any vulnerabilities in the ‘Goliath’; the Blades have won six of their last seven and with home advantage the odds look about right.
Giant killing potential: 2/10
