Saturday Accumulator Tip

Howe: A highly regarded young boss

Sometimes unfashionable clubs get undervalued just because of who they are. That seems to be the case this weekend.

Yet again I find the Championship offering up most of the best value for the latest round of league matches. Momentum is so often the key in the second tier and I’ve found three sides at longer than evens who should continue good runs against mediocre opponents. The treble on Hull, Barnsley and Burnley to win is a best price 19/2 with VictorChandler.

If you were only going to bet on one match in England this weekend, I would recommend Barnsley to beat Ipswich at Oakwell. The form book tells you all you need to know. The Tractor Boys head to Yorkshire with their tales between their legs after a dismal run of seven consecutive defeats. Town have plummeted down to 21st in the table and manager Paul Jewell is really feeling the heat. The last thing he needs is a fixture against the Tykes, who have won four Championship games on the spin. Odds on a home win of 21/20 (VictorChandler) are spectacular in the circumstances.

Another side flying up the table is Burnley (21/20), who host a Portsmouth side yet to win away. They beat Ipswich 4-0 themselves recently but it was the 2-1 win at Upton Park last Saturday that really caught the eye. The Clarets came from behind against the promotion favourites, to make it a third consecutive victory in the league. Eddie Howe’s side is suddenly looking full of goals; Chris McCann, Jay Rodriguez and Sam Vokes (on-loan from Wolves) have all found the net at least twice in the last three successful outings.

Finally we put our faith in Hull City to win at bottom of the table Coventry City (6/4 VictorChandler). The Tigers have already enjoyed a good week at the KC Stadium following 2-1 wins over high-profile opponents Leicester and Birmingham. The appointment of Nick Barmby as ‘player-caretaker manager’ has gone down a storm with the fans and it would be no surprise to see the former England midfielder named as the permanent boss.

Hull are sixth in the table and know that this is the sort of trip they need to take three points from if they are to maintain a serious promotion bid. Andy Thorn’s Sky Blues look beleaguered, currently seven points from safety. Coventry are nine matches without a victory, and it would take a braver man than me to say that run will end on Saturday.
