I’m not normally one for historical trends - the past is the past and all that - but Wayne Rooney’s habit of starting seasons strongly shouldn’t be ignored on Saturday lunchtime.
The England record goalscorer in waiting has found the net on the opening weekend of a campaign six times; that’s better than any other current Premier League player has managed. This tells us that the 29-year-old knows how to pre-season well and hit the ground running.
