Premier League Preview

Martinez needs to stop the rot

With most of the top sides having games they are expected to win, dropped points will mean lost ground in the title race.

We look at some some interesting betting angles ahead of another bumper weekend of top flight football.

Newcastle v Everton:

Third in the league, with only seven goals conceded in 10 matches - the Magpies have surprised everyone this season. They are 13/5 (Bet365) to win again without conceding. The Toffees are 12/5 (Betfred) to be the team to end Newcastle’s unbeaten record.

Arsenal v West Brom:

Although very short odds to win (4/9 Coral), the Gunners are 6/4 (WilliamHill) to win and keep a clean sheet; the 5-3 triumph over Chelsea showed that problems still remain at one end of the pitch. The Baggies are 100/1 (Boylesport) to repeat last season’s 3-2 victory at the Emirates.

Aston Villa v Norwich:

Darren Bent is 6/5 (Coral) to score for his third consecutive home match, with Villa 10/11 (WilliamHill) to end a winless run of three. McLeish’s side have surrendered more points from winning positions than any other team in the top flight; the Canaries are 40/1 (Sportingbet) to trail at half-time but win by full-time.

Blackburn v Chelsea:

Rovers are 13/2 (PaddyPower) to get their second league win of the campaign against another London big gun - they beat Arsenal 4-3 in September. The Blues come into the game off the back of consecutive league defeats, but have players who enjoy this opposition. Nicolas Anelka has scored 12 in 16 against Blackburn, and he’s 7/4 (Coral) to add to that tally on Saturday.

Liverpool v Swansea:

The Reds keep throwing away points from winning positions at Anfield; a third consecutive 1-1 home draw is a 10/1 shot with Totesport. Craig Bellamy is 5/1 (Ladbrokes) to open the scoring, as he did against Norwich. Danny Graham is 12/1 (VictorChandler) in the same market having found the net in four consecutive league games.

Man Utd v Sunderland:

Since losing 6-1 to City, United have won three in a row without conceding in all competitions; another win with a clean sheet is evens (WilliamHill) here. Steve Bruce appears to be the perfect visiting manager as Sir Alex celebrates 25 years in the hot seat; the Black Cats are 14/1 (StanJames) to ruin the party with a shock victory.

QPR v Man City:

The Hoops are 10/1 (StanJames) to win their first game back at Loftus Road since the 1-0 victory over Chelsea a fortnight ago. Adel Taarabt is 14/1 (Bet365) to be first goalscorer -he’s had 29 shots this season without reward. The visitors are 11/4 (Coral) to win by three goals or more for the nineth time this season in all competitions.

Wolves v Wigan:

The two most out-of-form sides in the division clash at Molineux. Another defeat would be catastrophic for either manager who are under fire after their jobs looked secure in early Autumn. Martinez is 4/1 (Ladbrokes) and McCarthy (7/1 StanJames) in the next manager to leave his post market. Wolves are evens (Boylesports) to win, with Wigan at 7/2 (VictorChandler).

Bolton v Stoke:

Remarkably, the Trotters are still pointless at the Reebok this season - they are 6/4 (Coral) to end that run with three. The Potters have hosted Newcastle, then been to Tel-Aviv and back since Bolton last took to the pitch. Stoke have only scored two first half league goals this campaign; Pulis’ side are 13/2 (WilliamHill) to be drawing at the break, but victors by the end.

Fulham v Tottenham:

Andy Johnson continued his sparkling Europa League form with a spectacular brace on Thursday night; he is 17/2 (VictorChandler) to open the scoring at Craven Cottage on Sunday. He will face serious competition from Rafael van der Vaart; the Dutch ace is 13/2 (VictorChandler) having found the net in five league games in a row.
