Premier League: Latest Odds

Mancini could barely contain his delight

On Sunday Manchester City delivered a stark warning that the balance of football power in this country may have permanently shifted in their direction.

Sunday was a day of rare drama in the Premier League with Manchester City announcing themselves as the new favourites for the title with a remarkable 6-1 win at Old Trafford. Roberto Mancini’s side are now a best price of 15/8 (Totesport) for the league after they ripped neighbours United to shreds in their own back yard.

The sending off of Johnny Evans didn’t help the defending champions, but in truth that was no excuse for the thrashing Ferguson’s side took. But perhaps those who see it as nothing more than a bizarre aberration may think this is the perfect moment to back United to retain the league - now a 2/1 shot with Betfred.

The afternoon was equally disastrous for Chelsea who self-destructed when handed the opportunity to overtake the Red Devils. Jose Boswinga and Didier Drogba both saw red in the first half of a 1-0 defeat to west London rivals QPR. But once more, as at Old Trafford, the lead had been established while the sides were 11 against 11. The Blues suddenly find themselves six points behind Man City and have drifted out to 9/2 with Betfred in the title betting.

Liverpool were yet another big side to falter over the weekend, held at Anfield 1-1 by promoted Norwich City. Kenny Dalglish’s team are now down in sixth spot after Tottenham overhauled them with a slender 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers. Harry Redknapp’s side are now 5/4 to claim a top four finish with PaddyPower; the same firm offer the same odds on Liverpool, who are a point behind Spurs having played a game more.

The team currently occupying fourth spot are Newcastle United who remained unbeaten with a 1-0 triumph over Wigan Athletic. The bookies are plainly unconvinced that this will last however; the Toon Army are 33/1 with Coral to finish there or higher.
