In the first goalscorer market it’s Danny Welbeck who stands out as the value after four goals in his last six starts for his country. The 21-year-old is a best price 7/1 (StanJames) to break the deadlock in Warsaw.
Wayne Rooney (5/1 BetVictor) grabbed many of the headlines on Friday night after netting twice as captain. But the replacement skipper needed a penalty to get off the mark while Welbeck fired in twice from open play. The senior Manchester United forward has scored fewer times for England in 2012 and is only favoured by the bookies on reputation.
Jermain Defoe (11/2 Ladbrokes) looks destined for another frustrating stint on the bench so is best avoided at the price. Meanwhile, Poland’s main threat, Robert Lewandowski (15/2 Skybet) is going through a relatively quiet spell in front of goal and will miss the service that injured Dortmund team-mate Jacub Blaszczykowski would have provided.
With anybody else looking like a wild gamble in the first goalscorer market, Danny Welbeck is the shrewdest option of the main candidates.
