Hoddle for England Return?

Hoddle: An unlikely new candidate.

The former Spurs favourite has expressed a desire to return to the post he held in the late 1990s.

With everyone assuming Harry Redknapp will become the next England manager, almost nobody else has wanted to put their name in the frame, presumably for fear of rejection. But now Glenn Hoddle has thrown his hat into the ring, claiming his “life would be incomplete without a second opportunity as national boss.”

The bookies don’t look too concerned, although a few have cut their odds after Alan Shearer appeared to endorse the former Tottenham favourite, but only if things fell through with Redknapp. Coral are offering a best price of 66/1 on Hoddle making the most unlikely of returns after his spell in charge of the ‘Three Lions’ from 1996 to 1999. He resigned the post in controversial circumstances after making ill-advised comments about disabled people.

But Shearer, national captain under Hoddle, told BBC Sport that the man who hasn’t coached since leaving Wolves in 2006 could be a realistic candidate. “Why shouldn’t he be? He was successful when he was England manger… his coaching was excellent and he had a decent record, ‘’ he added.

Redknapp is still the big favourite for the job at a best price of 4/6 with StanJames. Roy Hodgson is next in the betting at 6/1 with Coral. Caretaker boss Stuart Pearce is 9/1 with PaddyPower.
