FA Cup 3rd Round Preview

We examine if the old adage of ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’ holds true in the FA Cup third round.

It is that time of year when football romantics go all misty-eyed trawling through the FA Cup 3rd round fixtures looking for shocks. The bookmakers have taken a more pragmatic approach. Apart from Newcastle, every Premier League team is favourite to win against lower league opposition.

Rather than obsess over league hierarchy we have taken a different approach. Instead we are pitting form vs form. The old adage is that class is permanent and form is temporary but what if that isn’t true?

We have rated each team according to the points per game (total points / total games) they have earned so far this season. Then we simply compare the two results.

Five Biggest Disparities

The table above lists the five teams with the biggest supremacy over their opposition according to points per game (PPG) this season. The biggest disparity is between Man Utd and West Ham, with the Premier League leaders earning 1.17 PPG more than their London rivals.

Two potential shocks on the cards are wins for Crawley and Bournemouth. Both League One sides are sitting in the top-8 in their division whereas their opposition are languishing at the bottom of the Premier League. It will be interesting to see if form overcomes their relative positions in the league pyramid.
