Europa League Double

Lennon needs a tonic

The British teams will want to win their home games but that's a big ask on Thursday.

Celtic and Stoke both play at home on Thursday, and they are two sides we should always expect more from on their own patch - not least when it comes to European competition. Neil Lennon’s side will really struggle to overcome an impressive Udinese side over in Italy but a vociferous Glasgow backing should prove a great leveller at Celtic Park.

Besiktas are improving under a new coach and with Stoke’s punishing travel schedule taking its toll, a home win maybe not be as likely as first thought there. Back both games to be draws at attractive odds of 10.5/1 with SkyBet.

There was a time when you would back Celtic to beat just about anybody on their own patch. Those high expectations have to be downgraded a little these days. The fact is that the Bhoys are only still playing continental football by default. They were dispatched 3-1 on aggregate by FC Sion in qualifying before the Swiss side were thrown out for breaking regulations. Back in the competition, Celtic were then soundly beaten by Atletico Madrid in their first group outing.

A recent 4-2 defeat to rivals Rangers has left Hoops fans disheartened and short of confidence ahead of a visit from one of Italy’s finest. Indeed, Udinese were unfortunate not to topple Arsenal over two legs of Champions League qualification. They are the better side and would be my choice to win if they travelled at anything like full strength. However, the decision to rest star striker Antonio Di Natale could be significant. With Antonio Floro Flores and Barreto also sidelined, the visitors look lightweight up front. With that in mind I think Celtic can escape with a point.

Stoke will take great heart from their 1-1 draw with Man Utd but I just feel that all these exciting excursions will take catch up with them sometime. Besiktas are no mugs, and their form is good having won four on the bounce, scoring 11 times in the process. The Turkish side have years of Champions League experience, and they may cope better than many others with a trip to the Brittania Stadium. Another stalemate looks on the cards.

SkyBet offer the best combined price on the market for two draws in these games at 10.5/1.
