Euro 2016 Tips: England Top Goalscorer - Wayne Rooney

Harry Kane (23/10) is clear favourite to top score for England in France but over a handful of matches, Wayne Rooney looks overpriced at 9/2 with Paddy Power.

While it’s true that Kane has enjoyed a wonderful campaign for Spurs, the 22-year-old is still something of a rough diamond at international level. It remains to be seen if Hodgson can find a system that plays to his strengths and if he insists on him taking all corners he may not be in the dangerous zone when it counts at times.

Enter Wayne Rooney. The England boss looks certain to find a spot for his captain and even in a deeper lying role he is likely to threaten on a good day. The nation’s top goalscorer of all time fired seven times in eight qualifying matches to signify his continuing importance if the Three Lions are to perform well.

Then consider that any penalties that come England’s way will surely be handed to the captain. Kane missed his attempt against Turkey recently, in the absence of Rooney, and that should remove any doubts on who gets the nod.

In a market where it might only take two goals to win, such fine margins can make all the difference.
