Russia Acknowledged as Contenders
The Group A favourites signalled that they will take some stopping this summer.
On an eventful opening day to the tournament, it was Russia who made the strongest statement of intent in a 4-1 demolition of Czech Republic. Dick Advocaat’s stylish side are now a best price of just 14/1 (PaddyPower) to lift the trophy; they had been 20/1 with many bookies prior to kick-off.
The competition opened with co-hosts Poland throwing away a golden opportunity. A goal down with a man sent off, Greece showed significant resolve to fightback for a 1-1 draw. But it could have been even better for the 2004 champions who missed a penalty after home goalkeeper Szczesny was also dismissed in the second half.
Group A is already looking like a straight battle to finish second behind the Russians. Poland are evens (Bet365) to make the quarter-finals with Greece 7/4 (BetVictor) and Czech Republic 10/3 (BetVictor) to qualify.
