Erroneous Round of Premier League Results

If you judged football results on shots not goals then eight of last weekend’s Premier League matches would have had a different outcome.

If you are a regular football punter, the best thing you could have done last week was go on holiday. Not only did we see some unexpected results, but the scorelines weren’t fair representations of what happened during the games.

Negative numbers = away team supremacy

If we analyse the last round of Premier League fixtures and calculate a theoretical scoreline based on ‘shots’ we get eight different results. Only Tottenham’s win over Swansea and the draw between Man Utd and Chelsea are judged as ‘fair’ results.

Liverpool Defence Thwarts Villa
One of the most misleading results was Liverpool’s win at Villa Park. Aston Villa had 17 shots compared to Liverpool’s five but a combination of Villa’s poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Simon Mignolet meant the visitors left with all three points.

Liverpool created very little, Daniel Sturridge’s goal was his team’s only shot on target all match. Brendan Rodgers was happy to rely on his defence to win the match but Liverpool will need to show more ambition in their next away game if they are to keep up their good start.

Cardiff Take Their Chances
Manchester City dominated the match with 70% possession but as is common with these ‘shock’ results the underdogs took their chances. Cardiff had nine shots in total, six on target, yielding three goals.

It is an unsustainable conversion rate and the value bet might be to oppose them next time out, with Everton 13/10 (Bet365) to win in Cardiff on Saturday.
