England v Scotland Tip

The oldest rivalry in international football resumes after a 14-year break.

Scotland are quoted as long as 8/1 (Skybet) to beat the ‘Auld enemy’ on Wednesday and that looks too long given the context of the match. However, Hodgson’s England don’t lose much at all, so the draw appeals at best odds of 7/2 with Boylesports.

Put simply, it doesn’t matter how much the ‘Three Lions’ camp talk up this fixture, I can’t be convinced that the occasion doesn’t matter infinitely more to the Tartan Army. Celtic captain Scott Brown says leading his country out at Wembley will be even bigger than skippering his club in the last-16 of the Champions League. It’s hard to envisage any of his opponents saying the same thing.

Scotland also arrive off the back of their finest result in many years - a 1-0 victory against highly-ranked Croatia in Zagreb. That will fill Strachan’s boys with belief.

Furthermore, England have merely drawn with a few mediocre teams in the past 12 months; Poland, Montenegro and most notably the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in May. A repeat result would not be a surprise.
