England Player of the Year 2013 Betting

Lampard, Rooney and Gerrard have all won this award twice each. Could one of them become the first to make it a treble?

After a man-of-the-match display against Brazil in February, Jack Wilshire is the 2/1 favourite to be named England Player of the Year for 2013. The Arsenal midfielder pulled the strings during the 2-1 victory over the South Americans and his price has continued to shorten since.

However, given that the award is decided by England fans who vote at the end of the calender year, there are some decent long-shot alternatives to consider. Wayne Rooney (6/1) and Theo Walcott (8/1) come next in the betting as the bookies generally favour the more attacking players.

Steven Gerrard (10/1) won the 2012 award, his second time, but there may be an even better prospect at much longer odds. Frank Lampard is way out at 33/1 having scored the winner against Brazil in some style.

The Chelsea star is clearly discounted for a couple of reasons, neither of which are irreconcilable with potential success. Firstly his age, and secondly uncertainty regarding his club future. But the man who recently reached the 200-goal landmark for the Blues is currently playing as well as ever and is poised to play an important role for his country for some time yet.

Lampard has scored four goals in his last four appearances for England and remains that rarest of commodities; a player who can find the net reliably arriving late in the penalty area. The 34-year-old won this award in 2004 and 2005 and is probably now as popular as at any time during his career. The individual hat-trick isn’t out of the question.
