Cesar Halts Tottenham Charge

We take a statistical approach to the Premier League to see which teams are performing better than their results.

Using the criteria set out in our ‘Shots On Target’ feature, each week we will analyse the recent set of Premier League fixtures to see if the scorelines were a fair reflection of the games. We adopt ‘shots on target’ rather than goals as out key metric.

Negative numbers = away team supremacy

Hail Cesar
It took an inspired performance from the QPR goalkeeper to prevent Tottenham winning at Loftus Road. Spurs dominated proceedings, registering 7 shots on target compared to QPR’s zero. Most weekends that domination would be enough to win 2-0.  It was Julio Cesar’s best performance of the season according to statistical website whoscored.com, which made him man of the match.

Alternative Form Table

Tottenham have taken 14 points from their last six games, but using the ‘shots on target’ metric, they are worthy of a maximum 18. On Sunday they face a Manchester United side who sit bottom of the ‘alternative form’ table.

Yet again Sir Alex Ferguson’s men earned maximum points despite letting Liverpool back into the game last Sunday. It is a well-trodden cliché that United are winning without playing well. Is that part of their genetic makeup or will they come unstuck at White Hart Lane this weekend? Tottenham are 2/1 (Paddy Power) to win.
