Benitez On The Brink

Benitez facing the sack

Benitez denies he has been sacked but today marks a crucial day in his tenure

World Club Champions and Italian Super Cup, two minor bits of silverware in most peoples eyes but Benitez has delivered what Inter President Moratti demanded, a legacy. The Inter team of 2010 has won everything. Unfortunately they don’t look like winning anything in 2011 and for Benitez and his job prospects that is a problem. Since the defeat at White Hart Lane the wheels have come off, only one win in thier last six league games have seen pre season favourites Inter drift out to 11/2 with Victor Chandler in the Serie A betting.

Speaking after Saturday’s World Club victory, Benitez said: “There are three possibilities for the club. One, 100% support for the coach and buy four or five players to build a stronger team with competition among the players to be able to carry on winning matches and trophies.
“Two, carry on like this without a project, without planning, and go ahead with one person to blame, for the whole season.
“The third, is to speak to my agent to reach an agreement if there is not this support. Simple.”

Rumours that President Moratti was in Spain to meet with Benitez’s representative Manuel Garcia Quilon were incorrect as he was in Madrid for non-footballing business, regardless of which if he were to sack Benitez he would do so in person. The persistent rumours won’t go and Unibet have Benitez at 2/11 to be the Next Serie A manager to lose his job; Inter lie 13 points off the top of the league, albeit with two games in had, and this won’t change until Serie A resume on the 6th January. It’s going to be a long hard winter for Rafa.
