Aston Villa v Tottenham Tip

After their battering at Stamford Bridge, Villa may get too cautious to ensure there's no repeat here.

Aston Villa’s nightmare 8-0 defeat at Chelsea was one of the most ludicrous scorelines in recent memory, not least because of results heading into that encounter. The Villains had put together a six-match unbeaten stretch across all competitions and they still haven’t conceded in any of their last three on their own patch.

How they react today will be very interesting. One suspects that a humiliated team will retreat back into its shell to ensure that nothing like that happens again. The problem with that is an ultra-defensive Villa side is very unlikely to beat decent opponents like Spurs. Damage limitation looks like the most likely outcome and you almost wonder if both sets of supporters would accept a 1-0 win for Tottenham at best odds of 8/1 with BetVictor.

Spurs have scored in all eight of their Premier League away matches this term but that’s not to say it hasn’t been hard going of late. After losing to Everton, AVB’s boys edged past Swansea 1-0 before being held 0-0 by Stoke at White Hart Lane. I think Paul Lambert will make sure it’s tough again today but genuine top-four contenders should just about get the job done.
