3 Premier League Special Tips

A great seasonal bet. Ba Humbug!

Sometimes we get our best value by playing the long game.

At BettingBias we primarily focus on short-term winners, but let’s take a look at some of the best options for a big pay day down the line. These three options should add considerable interest to the remainder of the 2011-12 Premier League season.

Tottenham to win the Premier League: 18/1 (WilliamHill)

How can this price be right? Spurs are two points behind Man United with a game-in-hand, yet the champions are 9/4 (Coral) for the title. These odds purely reflect reputation; on every other criteria Tottenham are genuine contenders.

In Harry Redknapp, they have a top manager, and current favourite to be the next boss of the national team. The quality of the squad is arguably superior to than on offer to Sir Alex Ferguson. In midfield, Bale, Modric and Parker would surely all waltz into the United starting line-up. Friedel, King, Van der Vaart and Adebayor are all worthy of Championship winning sides as well.

They clearly have a job on their hands to catch the Manchester clubs but European football may well play into their hands. Spurs don’t have any more continental commitments this season, whereas City and United are stuck with the Europa League.

Newcastle to finish top six: 9/2 (StanJames)

The Magpies have exceeded expectations already this season but everybody is assuming it can’t last. Admittedly, a top four spot never looked realistic, but it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that one of the biggest teams could be overcome. At the moment, Liverpool appear the most likely to finish behind Alan Pardew’s side, trailing by three points and showing their old vulnerabilities.

The Reds have already lost three of their first seven away games having stumbled again at Fulham recently. Combine that with a lack of killer instinct at home; five of the seven encounters at Anfield have been draws. It isn’t terribly impressive, but we shouldn’t be that surprised considering this is a side that has finished sixth and seventh in the last two campaigns.

This is a good time to back Newcastle because their ‘sticky patch’ has really just been a run of fixtures against the very best teams. That stretch is over now with upcoming opponents Norwich, Swansea, West Brom and Bolton providing an opportunity to get back on track in the next four games.

Demba Ba to be Leading Goalscorer (Each-way): 33/1 (PaddyPower)

Another reason why Newcastle can succeed. With quarter odds paid out on the top three scorers in the division, this is good value even if you can’t see the Senegalese striker overhauling Robin Van Persie at the top of the charts. Ba trails the Dutchman by five, and that is far from insurmountable. However, with an each-way bet the most important thing is that the ex-West Ham striker is hot on the heels off Aguero and Dzeko, and level with Rooney - a 10/1 shot (VictorChandler).

Ba has an advantage over the other contenders in that he is bound to get more Premier League minutes on the pitch. Wenger, Mancini and Ferguson have to rotate their star performers with more European football and domestic cup games to contemplate.

The Magpies striker is no flash in the pan either. The 26-year-old bagged seven league goals in 12 appearances at West Ham at the end of last season; that was in a team that finished bottom of the pile. He has scored more league goals in 2011 than everybody bar Van Persie and Rooney; at 33/1 he offers us yet more great value.
