Wimbledon Profile: Caroline Wozniacki

Wozniacki is flattered by her odds.

The world number one is ranked only sixth in the betting even though everybody above her have their own issues. This tells its own story.

Best Odds: 11/1 - Coral
Seed: 1
Previous best at SW19: 4th round (2009, 2010)
Grand Slam Titles: 0

Wimbledon Record:
Has never made it beyond the round of 16, but at 20-years-old she has time on her side in a women’s game that suddenly finds a number of its top players nearer to 30. Has never beaten one of the really big names at the All-England Club with a third round win over Anastasia Pavlyunchenkova last year, as good as it gets. Petra Kvitora stopped the Dane in round four after that. As world number one, Wozniacki has been given the top seeding; on this evidence it looks like a lazy decision by the committee.

Form:
A run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open may have left a few psychological scars for the world’s top ranked player who will always have her sceptics until she wins a Grand Slam title. Wozniacki had a match point on her serve in the second set of the match with Li Na. The opportunity was missed and the Chinese stormed back to win 3-6 7-5 6-3. The Dane has kept at the top by virtue of being a serial winner of regualr tour events; she has claimed five titles this year including a first success on red clay. But then the French Open produced a limp 6-1 6-3 exit at the hands of Daniela Hantuchova in round three.

Prospects:
Nobody who bases their predictions on Grand Slam performances could give Wozniacki a prayer. In the big four tournaments, the 20-year-old has only one final appearance in the 2009 US Open to her name. Renowned as a counter-puncher who excels at the defensive aspects of tennis, she simply doesn’t seem to have the game required to rule Centre Court.
