Wimbledon Profile: Andy Roddick

Roddick may be a popular long-shot bet.

The popular American has made it to three finals and always has a chance with his formidable serve.

Record at Wimbledon:
Can consider himself unlucky to have played his best tennis in the same era as Roger Federer. The Swiss has been the American’s nemesis on every trip to the final at the All-England Club. 2009 looked like it was finally going to be ‘A-Rod’s year but he was denied again despite setting the record for the most games ever won in a Wimbledon final (39). The final score was 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 to Federer. Last year Roddick was ousted in round four by Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan in five sets.

Form:
An indifferent season has seen Roddick falter in the round of 16 at the Australian Open and generally struggle to maintain a high ranking position - he is currently 10th having fallen to a nine-year low of 14th a few months ago. He pulled out of the French Open with a shoulder injury but played at Queen’s Club, where he is a 4-time champion, only to lose to Andy Murray in the semi-finals.

Prospects:
The bookies clearly think that Roddick’s best chances have been and gone already. But the American remains a formidable opponent on grass where his serve always gives him a chance. Despite his relatively early exit last year, he only dropped serve once in the entire five-set match that he lost. It was exactly the same story the previous year when Federer only managed the feat once in the longest men’s Grand Slam final in history.
