Wimbledon 1st Round Alternative Analysis

We take a different approach to the first round of matches at Wimbledon by analysing total points won as opposed to sets.

Tennis is a peculiar sport because it is possible to win your match without winning the most points. Bearing this in mind, we have analysed the first round of men’s matches and reported the results in terms of total points won.

First Round Total Points
wimbledon round 1 alternate analysis

Key
points = total points won
supremacy = points won minus opponents points won
supremacy/sets = points supremacy divided by total sets played

Our key metric is the ‘supremacy/sets’, this should give a measure of how dominant the measure of victory was, although we don’t take into account the skill level of the opposition.

The first interesting point to note is that Bernard Tomic won his first round match despite winning fewer points than his opponent. Was he fortunate to escape with a win? The Australian might look poor value at 8/13 (Stan James) to beat James Blake (13/8 Skybet).

Of the seeded players Jo Wilfried-Tsonga struggled in his first round match therefore perhaps yesterday’s defeat wasn’t a complete shock.

Richard Gasquet, the number nine seed, could find himself in the same position against Go Soeda (14/1 Bet365) who enjoyed a comfortable win in his first match.
