Murray Edges Five-Set Thriller

Murray showed his resilience

The British number one has progressed to the quarter finals at Roland Garros, against all the odds.

Andy Murray produced one of the best wins of his career as he battled back from injury, and two sets down, before defeating Viktor Troicki 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5.

The British number one had forced the match into a second day when he levelled at two sets all, before bad light stopped play on Monday evening. Any thoughts that he had done the hard part were banished when he trailed 2-5 in the deciding set after play resumed on Tuesday. At one point Troicki served for the match at 5-3 30-0 and Murray was so close to elimination that his tournament odds drifted out to 40/1. However, five consecutive games won on the trot ensured the world number four’s passage to the quarter finals. Murray is now a best price of just 16/1 with Betfred to win the French Open.

Next up for the Scot is unseeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in the last eight on Wednesday. Murray has beaten him on both his last trips to Paris, prompting expectations of a potential semi final match up with Rafa Nadal. The defending champion is 23/10 with Sportingbet to retain his crown following some mediocre form to this point.

Novak Djokovic is the new bookies’ favourite at a best price of 10/11 with Betfred. Those odds have been influenced by the Serbian star’s early qualification for the semis after his next scheduled opponent, Fabio Fognini withdrew through injury. 2009 champion Roger Federer is 15/2 with PaddyPower.
