Federer v Tsonga

Tsonga is looking for 3 in a row

The Frenchman has beaten the former world number one both times they have met in 2011.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga looks like a player who has the measure of Roger Federer, a great champion who sadly appears to be past his best. Bet365 go best-price 9/4 on the popular Frenchman beating the Swiss star in the quarter-finals of the US Open. Tsonga has won both meetings in 2011, including the last eight clash at Wimbledon. There’s no reason why he can’t make it a glorious hat-trick at Flushing Meadows.

Federer may have made light work of his opponents so far, but then again he hasn’t yet been truly tested. He has only faced one seed, Marin Cilic, and the Croatian still won a set and made things difficult for a while. Tsonga will be a big step up. The quarter final clash at SW17 was the first time that Federer has ever lost having led by two sets in a Grand Slam. With that experience in the bag, the number 11 seed will hardly be daunted even if things start badly this time round.

Tsonga is coming in off the back of another 5-set win, this time over hotly fancied Mardy Fish. Yes, that will have sapped his energy levels but the 26-year-old finished strongly - he took the fourth and fifth sets 6-4 6-2 - and he will be fine after some rest. The big server knows that his Wimbledon win over Federer was no fluke. The pair recently met again at the Rogers Cup in Montreal; the 7-6 4-6 6-1 win was pretty convincing in the end. Back the head-to-head form to hold-up at 9/4 with Bet365.
