From May To Dissembler

Jonny May has been getting the tries but the underlying numbers suggest the Harlequins fullback is still the danger man.

In last season’s Six Nations Championship, we enjoyed some success by playing the first try and anytime tryscorer markets.

Rather than just plump for the recent scorers, we dug below the surface to discover the numbers that facilitate scoring. Defenders beaten, clean breaks and metres made were all good indicators of dangerous attacking players, with Mike Brown a particular stand-out.

Revisiting the practise for the Autumn Internationals the picture isn’t quite so clear. Marlon Yarde made a successful cameo from the bench last weekend but that’s where he finds himself again. A last tryscorer bet at 11/1 (Paddy Power) is the only way to play him.

Jonny May heads the betting thanks to his three tries in the Autumn Internationals but his underlying numbers are no better than Mike Brown.

The Harlequins fullback has made more metres per80 and beaten more defenders per80 than May, yet finds himself further down the betting.

With the Gloucester winger a marked man, space could open up for Mike Brown to be first tryscorer at 14/1 (Paddy Power), with our bet refunded if he scores anytime during the game.
