York Tips: Cheviot

Form figures uninspiring because of the ground. Can be a smart sprinter on his day - won on firm ground last year off a mark of 100.

A series of zeros makes Cheviot’s form unappealing for the 4.05 York but he’s had excuses. To be at his best he needs good to firm ground and that’s been hard to come by in recent seasons.

Cheviot record on good to firm/firm: 923225110

The only times Cheviot has been badly beaten on good to firm was on his race course debut back in 2008 and at Musselburgh in June when he got no sort of run up the stand’s rail.

When the ground is suitable, Cheviot usual runs well. Last year he won two races on firm ground, a conditions race at Beverley and a handicap at Haydock off a mark of 100.

This afternoon he races off 94 and as long as the ground hasn’t been overwatered he should be competitive at 28/1 (William Hill).
