York Tips: Blessington

Winner last time out but deserves upgrading after racing against a strong draw bias.

The 2.00 York is a valuable sales race but despite the big field there is little strength in depth. The big prize on offer has attracted plenty of runners but the best horses are at the top of the market.

The one horse who stands out at the prices is Blessington. He was an impressive winner on his last start at Goodwood but the run needs upgrading considering where he raced.

Drawn in stall 17 of 18, he made all against the unfavoured stand’s rail. He beat everything that raced with him quite comfortably, the strength of the draw bias is apparent in their subsequent runs.

Prince Regal, beaten 3.5 lengths, went on to win his next start, albeit it in lesser company. Raging Bear and World Record also raced on the stand’s side and improved by 8lbs and 15lbs on their next starts according to Racing Post Ratings. To put this into context, Saint Jerome and Millers Wharf, who both raced down the centre, didn’t improve their RPRs on their next starts.

The evidence suggests Blessington is better than his bare form. With entries in the Mill Reef and Middle Park Stakes, both Group contests, connections seem to be of the same opinion.
