York Tips: Barnet Fair

Strong travelling type suited to a big sprint handicap. Proved capable in this grade when fifth in a similar race last autumn.

The 2.00 York is an extremely competitive handicap in which several have strong claims. Kaldoun Kingdom, York Glory and Dickie’s Lad all made my shortlist but after analysing the race over and over again, I keep coming back to Barnet Fair.

What I like about this horse is his high cruising speed. He travels extremely well through his races, which should be an advantage in a big field handicap on an easy track like York.

Campaigned largely in his own age group last year, he rarely ran a bad race but it was at Doncaster that he really impressed. It was the first time he tackled older horses and he finished a creditable fifth, beaten only 4.75 lengths. The result needs upgrading as he was forced to switch around rivals as he struggling to get a clear run. He finished half a length behind Shropshire, yet is double his price at York this afternoon.

Only four-years-old, you would expect the horse to have improved over the winter and with Silverstre De Sousa booked I’m expecting a big run at 16/1 (Betfred).
