York Tip: Masamah

Very speedy type who could turn into a group horse by the end of the season.

The 2.05 at York is a cracking little sprint and it contains a horse I am keen to see tested at this level. Masamah is entering his prime at five years of age and looks well worth a try in listed company.

A winner over course and distance in May it is conceivable that he could have won all his starts this season. Impossibly drawn at Chester he put in a sterling effort to finish third from stall 13 on his seasonal reappearance.

On the face of it he flopped when favourite for the Epsom Dash but watch the race and you will see he ran with credit. He comes out of stall eight in the red cap with grey silks.

Watch the Epsom Dash 2011.

As the gates open he practically falls out the stalls, his jockey may even lose one of his irons, it all looks very awkward. He then jumps when crossing the road, the area where the lighter coloured hay covers the course. Thereafter he hangs left, hating the camber of the track.

Considering everything went wrong in the race, it is to his immense credit that he was still competitive at the finish. He made up a lot of ground from the back, came down the unfavoured middle of the track and still ended only 1.5 lengths behind the winner.

A winner of 5 of his 11 races over the minimum distance, I can see Kevin Ryan’s gelding competing in Group Ones by the end of the season. Masamah holds entries for the Nunthorpe and Betfred Sprint, showing how highly rated he is. The ideal race would be the Prix De L’Abbaye in October, a race his trainer won with Desert Lord. The similarity between the two horses is striking. He can take this race at York on his way to stardom.
