York Tip: Caspar Netscher

Been running behind some smart prospects. Can finally enjoy the limelight on his own.

So early in their careers it is already the usual suspects competing for the Gimcrack, one of the more prestigious juvenile contests. Although the race doesn’t have a great bearing on the following year’s classics, it is still a valuable contest worth winning.

As I’ve mentioned before, in my opinion the best two-year-old around is Harbour Watch. Caspar Netcher finished third, 2.75 lengths behind him at Goodwood, and in theory he could be the third best juvenile in the UK.

He probably isn’t quite that good, but he is a smart performer. At Royal Ascot he finished 2.5 lengths behind Frederick Engels, another top juvenile. Despite only winning one race this year, Caspar Netcher has been running brilliantly in defeat.

Considering this is a Group Two, it actually represents one of his easier assignments. Expect him to frank the form of the top juveniles by winning the Gimcrack.
