York Racing Tips: La Fortunata

Has plenty of early speed but enough stamina to win beyond 5f. She could be the perfect horse for York. Beaten a short-head on her last visit.

York racecourse is always a track I’ve had problems with; it’s a flat track that favours speed horses but invariably these 5f sprint handicaps have big fields which should advantage hold-up horses.

To be victorious, I’m coming to the conclusion that you need the perfect blend of early speed and enough stamina to see the race out. In La Fortunata I’m hoping I’ve found this horse.

She showed plenty of speed to finish third in last year’s Epsom dash, the quickest 5f race in the country, therefore should have no problem lying up with the early pace. Her last win however came over an easy 6f at Newmarket, proving she also has a bit more stamina than a bare 5f sprinter.

Her trainer Mike Murphy has rightly waited for the ground to turn in her favour. She is 3/13 on good to firm ground and 0/9 on anything else.

She was beaten only a short-head over course and distance back in 2010 and at 33/1 (Stan James) she is massively overpriced for a race (3.45) that could be perfect for her.
