York Ebor Tips: Blue Surf

Best form is with cut in the ground and worries over his stamina could be mistaken.

Further overnight rain means the going at York is soft for the Ebor (3.50) and that changes the entire complexion of the race. There have been a spate of early non-runners but I expect most connections will chance their arm on unsuitable ground because of the prize on offer.

One horse that should not be inconvenienced by the rain is Blue Surf.

Blue Surf’s best three performances have come with cut in the ground; his career highlight being a class 2 handicap win at Newbury on heavy ground.

The one concern is the trip. He is yet to win beyond 10f and will be tackling 14f this afternoon. The market assumes he lacks the stamina for the Ebor but I’m not entirely convinced.

On his last couple of starts I think he’s lacked a turn of foot rather than stamina. At Goodwood the leaders powered away two furlongs from home, Blue Surf couldn’t match their acceleration but he plugged on rather than disappear out the back.

The fact his best form is with cut in the ground suggests he could just lack pace rather than stamina. Of course I could be totally wrong but at 40/1 (Stan James) it’s worth taking the chance and back him each-way.
