Windsor Racing Tip: Wooden King

Wooden King to Reign

Kept on improving throughout last year, winning four times. Should be even better for his underrated trainer.

The 18.50 at Windsor is a competitive race but low on quality. Plenty of horses are making their seasonal reappearances and most of them on the back of poor 2010 campaigns. Some might recapture the old magic but overall the quality of the field looks poor.

Last year was an excellent period for trainer Malcolm Saunders. Only a small yard with around 16 horses, he certainly got the best out of them. Twenty winners was a career best and considering most of his runners were in handicaps, where he achieved a 21% strike rate, that is nothing short of remarkable. To hit those sorts of numbers you need to be able to improve horses and Wooden King was one of them.

Starting the year rated 50, the horse visited the winners enclosure four times, including wins on his last two starts. Now rated 66, he still looks well treated considering his run of form. The horse did nothing but improve and although he is up in grade, his profile suggests he can handle it. He is only six years old and at 18/1, great value to continue the upwards curve.
