Rajsaman: Sussex Stakes

Not the long shot many believe him to be. The tactics of a small field may suit the horse.

The Sussex Stakes at 3.10 is a mouth-watering contest. With two brilliant horses in Frankel and Canford Cliffs it is a race to savour. Given the small field it is also a fascinating tactical battle and one that could cause a shock.

Richard Hughes has a straightforward task; he will sit on Frankel’s tail and use Canford Cliffs finishing kick to sail past him near the finish. The same tactics he employed to beat Goldikova.

The problem for Tom Queally is if he sets the pace on Frankel, he could end up being a sitting duck for his rival. The alternative is to hold the horse up but with no other front-runner, it could turn the race into a crawl.

With neither of these scenarios particularly appealing Queally might attempt to recreate his Royal Ascot tactics. After taking a huge amount of criticism from the media he would be a brave man but there is logic. The one advantage Frankel has over Canford Cliffs is stamina. There is no horse in the world that could have won the St. James’s Palace Stakes under that ride other than Frankel. If he chooses to kick for home with three or more furlongs to go, he could run the finishing kick out of Canford Cliffs.

It is a big risk to employ those tactics but if he did, it brings Rajsaman right into the reckoning. Widely ignored, this French raider is a classy horse. He finished fourth in the Hong Kong mile and was beaten only a length by Godikova last time out.

A hold-up performer, Freddie Head’s colt loves coming off a fast pace. He gave Goldikova almost a five-length head start but almost beat the wonder-mare.  If Frankel turns the race into a test of stamina then Rajsaman could pick up the pieces at huge odds.
