Steward’s Cup Pace Chart

With 28 runners spread across the track in Steward’s Cup (3.55 Goodwood - Saturday), the race could be dependant on where the early pace is. Using a method presented by Jon Gibby in the excellent book, “Well-Handicapped Horses” we can rank horses by their early speed. Looking at their last three runs, they are awarded points on how prominently they raced. The horses with the highest numbers are deemed the ‘pace-makers’.

According to the pace chart there are three potential pacemakers, Swiss Cross (stall 7), Es Que Love (17) and Lexi’s Hero (23). There is likely to be a split in the field but with two pace horses drawn high, I imagine a bigger group will congregate on the stand’s side. 

Fancied horses like Victoire De Lyphar, Hawkeyethenoo and Waffle might be all be disadvantage by racing away from the pace.
