Southwell Tip: National Anthem

Only having 4th start but wind-op and change of yards could be the key. Ran remarkable race after 417 day layoff. Set overly strong gallop but held on to win and earn adjusted speed rating of 86.

National Anthem put in a huge performance winning on a return from a 417 lay-off and if he doesn’t bounce he can make a mockery of his handicap mark.

National Anthem might be a 5-year-old but this is only his fourth start in an injury disrupted career. A recent new recruit to David Brown’s yard it is hoped connections can keep him sound, with recent wind surgery perhaps the key in that goal.

His four length win at Southwell was a sectional marvel. He went off too quick but the lead he established was insurmountable, the only horse to run an evenly paced raced was runner-up Mabre who was 15.5 lengths down with 3f to run!

Despite National Anthem’s unevenly paced race he clocked a good time that when adjusted for sectionals gives him a whopping speed rating of 86. He’s clearly got the pace to drop back to 5f and he looks thrown in off a mark of 75.
