Wokingham Tips: Rex Imperator

The Wokingham (4.25 Ascot) is a peculiar sprint handicap because out of the 29 runners there is no obvious pace-setter. This is an important factor because if the field splits, as it invariably does, you need to be in the quicker of the two groups.

The only pace angle I can find is with Hugo Palmer’s two horses. Zero Money likes to race prominently, whilst his other runner Khubala needs to come off a strong pace. Both have high draws and it might be in their interests if Zero Money acts as a pacemaker.

If the high numbers have an advantage then Rex Imperator could be the horse that capitalises. 

Last season he was mightily impressive when taking a competitive handicap at Windsor. He was racing against older horses that day but managed to win by 2 lengths in a fast time. He then ran another good race when fourth at Newmarket before his luck turned.

He was badly hampered at York and then banged his head in the stalls at Bath. The psychological effects stayed with him because on his next start he got worked up in the stalls at Doncaster. After an unsuccessful trip to Dubai he enjoyed a significant period of rest and looked back to his best three weeks ago at Doncaster.

A return to 6f on quick ground sees his optimal conditions and racing off his last winning mark he looks the best bet at 10/1 (BetVictor).
