Queen Mary Tip: Gypsy Robin

Trainer won this two years ago and turns up with a horse he rates evenly more highly.

When Frederick Engels won the Windsor Castle yesterday he turned the Queen Mary (5.00) into a one horse race. Shumoos beat that horse on her debut by 4.5 lengths and now looks something special. At 5/4 in the betting she only has to turn up to win but she offers poor value.

Firstly, the time she clocked at Haydock although good, wasn’t spectacular. Frederick Engels went on to run again and recorded a blistering time at Musselburgh before winning at Ascot. It could be that Frederick Engels improved between runs, something we have to take on trust with Shumoos.

Secondly, the only form Shumoos has to her name is a class five maiden win. If you take out the runner-up it wasn’t a strong race. In the last ten years every Queen Mary winner has triumphed in at least a class 4 race or been placed in class 1 company.

In such a competitive field and with question marks over whether she can repeat her debut run I’m willing to take her on with Gypsy Robin. Her trainer Wes Ward won the race in 2009 with Jealous Again and he thinks this horse is even better.  A 7.5 length winner in the States it is hard to judge her form, but she took a decent race worth almost £20,000. She is all speed and if pinging the gates she might get an unassailable lead.

Gentleman’s Code ran a good race for the trainer in the Windsor Castle, so I’m happy to assume that the yard have brought over some decent types. This could be the best at 7/1.
