Britannia Tip: Ashva

Ashva lucky with the draw

For the first time this week the pace is drawn low and that could favour the far side. Drawn one and off bottom weight, Ashva has been fortunate.

With 30 runners charging up the straight course the Britannia is devilishly difficult to sort out. All week pundits have been talking about the draw bias on the straight course favouring those in high stalls. I don’t think there is anything other than a pace bias. The early pace has been drawn high; the jockeys tack over to the stand’s rail to follow it and the bias is fulfilled.

Year after year we have seen the bias switch at Royal Ascot; as the near side ground gets chewed up, the far side actually has the better going. For the first time this week we have the pace drawn low and finally jockeys might opt to go there.

Drawn in stall one, the primary beneficiary is Ashva. Well beaten in the Dante, you can ignore that run as he was outclassed, but that race did see him raised 6lbs, enough to sneak into this handicap off bottom weight. The fourth place before York was much more promising. He made the running in a good handicap where all the protagonists closed from behind. He was last off the bridle that day and should be able to go with the stronger pace in the Britannia.

I expect trainer and jockey will decide to be more conservative with their tactics and take a lead. If the bias switches to low drawn horses at 50/1 he could spring a surprise.

Boylesports are going ¼ odds for the top SIX places in the Britannia so I advise placing the bet with them.
