Albany Tip: Samitar
Half sister won the race in 2007 and Mick Channon has laid the horse out for this.
Looking at the list of recent winners the Albany tends to go to precocious two-year-olds. None of the alumni have had glittering careers. As a result I’m focusing on horses who have been laid out for the race rather than it being a stepping stone.
Samitar looks like that horse. Her half sister Nijoom Dubai won the race in 2007 and trainer Mick Channon is hoping history repeats itself. With just a third place to her name she doesn’t look like an obvious winner but that ramps up the price for us.
Her debut at Newmarket was in a good race, the front three pulling nicely clear of the fourth horse that day. Samitar didn’t do a lot wrong, staying on at the end after making the early running. Her half-sister arrived at Ascot a maiden and that didn’t stop her.
Jamie Spencer takes the ride, and he has a fantastic 36% strike rate on Channon’s two-year-olds. As in 2007 we could have another surprise in the Albany.
