Newcastle: Gowanbuster

Finished seventh last time out but that was in a much stronger grade and showed bright early pace. Previous course and distance winner, well handicapped and this looks much easier on paper.

It’s been a while since Gowanbuster tasted success but he’s slipped to a very attractive handicap mark and drops into class 6 company for only the second time in his career. Last time out he seventh at Musselburgh but was only beaten 4.5 lenghts after setting a strong early gallop in class 4 company. (Incidentally he finished upsides fellow pace setter Kool Moe Dee who really should have won at Windsor on Monday.)

A three-time course winner, Gowanbuster hasn’t quite been lasting home over 6f at Newcastle, including when close second a month ago but he showed in Scotland he still has the pace to lead and in a lower grade he won’t need to run as fast in this grade. I fancy he could bounce out and make all over this stiff 5f.
