Midlands Grand National Tip: Big Occasion

The further he goes the better he is and the overnight rain is in his favour.

Chac Du Cadran is favourite to win the Midlands Grand National (3.50 Uttoxeter) but there isn’t much difference in form between him and Big Occasion, who is almost three times the price.

Both are young, progressive chasers working their way up the handicap, the only difference is that Big Occasion didn’t win his last race. I wouldn’t judge him too harshly on his second place at Lingfield. He was only beaten by one length and if the race were 100 yards further he would have won.

David Pipe’s 6-year-old seems to get better the further he goes and after winning a novices’ hurdle at Chepstow in 2011, his trainer was already touting him as a future Welsh National horse.

The confidence seems well placed and despite racing from outside the handicap he looks overpriced at 9/1 (Bet365).
