Meydan Tips: Lui Rei

Finished close 4th over an inadequate 5f last week. Ran well in big field sprints last year.

With the racing in the UK offering slim pickings, I’m off to Dubai in search of value. A big field lines up for the 4.15 Meydan but many of them can be ruled out quite quickly.

Several of the horses are much better on an artificial surface, whereas today’s race is on turf. There are also numerous 5f furlong specialists like Inxile, Confessional and Cheviot who won’t enjoy a strongly run 6f. With only one meeting a week, options are limited for connections, which is why you see their horses running in sub-optimal conditions. Understandably, there is no point in sending your horse all the way to Dubai only to leave him sat in his box.

One horse that will enjoy the conditions is Lui Rei. More of a 6f specialist, he enjoyed a good prep-race last week over 5f. He was outpaced by the fearsome gallop but was staying on nicely at the end to finish 4th only 2.25 lengths behind the winner.

That run proved his well-being and he will enjoy the step up in trip, having placed in the Steward’s Cup sprint at Goodwood last year. At 10/1 (Coral) he looks the best bet of the day.
