Lay of the Day: Mince

A new regular feature where we look at a horse we think has a smaller chance of winning than the odds suggest.

Mince enjoyed a terrific 2012, winning four consecutive races but after a poor performance in the Duke of York stakes, she has it all to prove again. Sprinters can be funny animals in that they have one brilliant season, then inexplicably go off the boil.

At York the ground was initially put forward as an excuse, but the going was riding better than the official description of good to soft and Mince won on soft ground at Ascot last October.

On his website Roger Charlton surmises that she probably needed the run more then he expected. This is a plausible excuse but her run at York (RPR = 92) was 26lbs below her best and she only improved 5lbs on her second run in 2012.

The likes of Boomerang Bob, Palace Moon, Sirius Prospect and Pandar are all useful sprinters and could upset Mince at odds-on.
