Lay of the Day: Chooseday

Chooseday was an obvious eye-catcher on his last start and will be over bet as a result, he also races under a completely different set of conditions.

Video form is one of the great innovations in horse racing, it means the stay at home punter can review races and draw their own conclusions, however there are some pitfalls.

If you spot an obvious eye-catcher, the chances are the rest of the betting public have seen the same thing.

Chooseday put in one such performance, rallying from a poor draw to finish second at Chester. It was a good run but he’s not certain to reproduce the form.

Firstly, he benefitted from a pace-collapse; the leaders went off too fast and he stayed on past beaten horses which exaggerating his turn of foot. Secondly, his best performances have come over 6f whereas today he races over 5f. And thirdly, his last win came at Chester so perhaps he is something of a course specialist.

What we have therefore is an eye-catching performance that came about because of three possible underlying factors. Faced with a different set of circumstances in the 4.10 York, Chooseday might not be the good bet that he appears.
