King George Fallout

One of racing’s summer highlights turned into a distressing affair. We examine the impact of the race.

The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a race that purists will want to quickly consign to history. Rewilding breaking down in front of the grandstand was an agonizing lowlight of a race most people will want to forget.

However it is a race that has an impact on the Prix de L’ Arc de Triomphe betting and therefore we need to take a view on it. Nathaniel was cut from 25/1 to 8/1 for that race, although John Gosden has suggested the Champion Stakes at Ascot as an alternative. Both races are within a fortnight of each other, but with such a good record at the Berkshire track it is an attractive option.

Workforce veered badly left in the finish to the King George, suggesting he was feeling an injury. It was later confirmed that the horse had been struck in to and returned to the paddock with a scar. It was another disappointing Ascot display from Workforce and he has drifted out to 7/1 for the Arc.

St Nicholas Abbey held no excuses and we are left with the impression that he is no longer the brilliant horse people had hoped for. He is a 20/1 chance to win at Longchamp.

Despite not having seen a racecourse for almost two moths, Derby winner Pour Moi has hardened as 7/2 favourite for the race.
