John Smith’s Cup Tip: Crystal Gal

Has run creditably in Listed races and the handicapper has left her on a lenient mark.

I’m very surprised to see Crystal Gal as the outsider for the John Smith’s Cup at York. Bought for 150,000 Guineas last November, there is a lot to like about this filly besides her price tag.

At Warwick she finished three lengths behind Timepiece. That result looks even better when you consider the horse has just won the Group One Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

She followed up that run with a game performance in a listed contest at Newcastle. Always up with the pace, she duelled up the home straight only to tire in the last half furlong.

Considering the company she has been keeping, the handicapper has given her an exploitable mark of 96. Trainer Lucy Wadham doesn’t have a huge string of horses, but those she has, she performs well with.

At a track that favours front-runners, Crystal Gal is no back marker at odds of 50/1. Back her each-way and get ¼ odds for a top four finish.
