Grand National 2011: Where They Finished
A quick guide to how your horse got on in the National.
1st Ballabriggs 14-1
Was at the front of affairs from the off. Led from the 15th, only headed briefly at Valentines before staying on to win by two and a quarter lengths.
2nd Oscar Time 14-1
Jumped well throughout but couldn’t reel in the leader.
3rd Don’t Push It 9-1
Came to win his race but top weight told as he couldn’t find that extra gear. A sterling performance nonetheless.
4th State Of Play 28-1
Now the third time in a row he has placed in the National. Jumped well but never looked like winning.
5th Niche Market 16-1
Was briefly in the lead at the 23rd (valentines) but tired on the flat. Most bookmakers pay each way on the fifth place horse.
6th The Midnight Club 15-2f
Mistake at the 3rd and hampered at the 7th meant the favourite’s chance was compromised early on. Victor Chandler paid each way on the sixth horse, so a relief for some punters.
7th Big Fella Thanks 12-1
Tracked the leaders for most of the way but badly tired on the run in. Lost out on a place as he comprehensively ran out of gas.
8th Surface To Air 100-1
Best of the big odds, ran a fine race until tiring on the run in.
9th Skippers Brig 33-1
Midfield throughout, never in contention, stayed on through the field at finish.
10th Backstage 16-1
Never dangerous, but kept going.
11th King Fontaine 80-1
Mistake at the 6th (Bechers Brook) dented his chances and never looked dangerous thereafter.
12th Silver By Nature 9-1
Couldn’t go the early pace and was never near the leaders.
13th In Compliance 66-1
Hampered and blundered on the first lap. Always mid-division.
14th Bluesea Cracker 25-1
Outpaced on the quicker ground.
15th Character Building 25-1
Never dangerous after being badly hampered at Becher’s first time round.
16th Golden Kite 66-1
Never in contention.
17th Chief Dan George 40-1
Tailed off.
18th Royal Rosa 100-1
Completed in his own time, but got round nevertheless.
19th Piraya 100-1
Jumped well enough for his price and happy to get round.

Bad mistake at the 19th eventually led to him being pulled up.
What A Friend 12-1 Pulled up 27th
Weakened after passing Becher’s for the second.
Arbor Supreme 20-1 Unseated 28th
Was always struggling before final error, unseating David Casey.

Mid-division but soon struggling, age might have caught up with the 2008 winner.
